Moss Removal

Roof Moss Removal and Treatment across Greater London

Moss holds water against your roof tiles like a sponge. As it spreads, it lifts tile edges, blocks the gaps that let rain run off, and sheds clumps into gutters and downpipes until they overflow. In frosty weather, the trapped moisture can freeze and damage the surface of the tiles. Clearing it keeps water moving off the roof as it should and helps the tiles underneath last longer. Older concrete tiles, with their rougher surface, often hold the most growth.

Ashlar Roofing removes moss by hand. It is scraped and brushed from the tiles carefully, working down the roof so tiles are not lifted or cracked, then a biocide treatment is applied to slow regrowth. Once the roof is clear, the debris is removed from gutters and downpipes so they can drain again. Any slipped, cracked or missing tiles found during the clean are pointed out to you, so they can be repaired before they let water in.

How We Carry Out Moss Removal

The main stages of the job, from the first inspection to the final check.

  1. Assess the Roof

We check how much moss there is, the type and condition of the tiles, and how the roof can be reached safely.

  2. Remove Moss by Hand

Moss is scraped and brushed off carefully, tile by tile where needed, without forcing water or tools under the laps.

  3. Apply the Biocide

A biocide is applied over the cleaned roof to kill remaining spores and hold back new growth.

  4. Clear Gutters and Report

Debris is cleared from gutters and downpipes, and we tell you about any slipped or damaged tiles found along the way.

FAQs

Common Questions About Moss Removal

Why is moss removed by hand?

High-pressure water can strip the surface from concrete and clay tiles, crack older tiles and drive water up under the laps into the roof space. Hand removal takes longer but leaves the tiles intact.

How quickly will moss grow back?

It depends on how shaded and damp the roof is. North-facing roofs and those under trees regrow fastest. The biocide delays new growth, and cutting back overhanging branches helps too.

Is moss actually harmful to a roof?

A light covering is mostly cosmetic, but heavy moss holds moisture, lifts tiles and blocks gutters. Left in place, that can lead to leaks and frost damage, so heavy growth is worth removing.

Will the biocide affect my garden?

The treatment is applied to the roof surface, with care taken to limit runoff onto plants and ponds below. Let us know about anything sensitive under the roof before the visit.

Can moss be removed from a slate roof?

Yes. Slates are brittle, so moss is removed with softer tools and extra care around the edges of each slate. The same biocide treatment can be applied afterwards.
